When we first start working towards a goal, we are filled with passion, fire and excitement. We feel invincible and we just know that we can achieve what we want. We ascend to our goal, determined to make it happen, and we know we can make it happen.
Then we begin to encounter some obstacles. We may struggle through them, but then we start making excuses not to work towards our goal. Maybe we lose interest and are swamped with daily activities. Before we know it, our goal is put on the back burner and we don’t work towards it anymore. Worse still, maybe we no longer believe we can fulfill our dreams. What has happened? In my own experience there are four important ingredients to make your dreams come true.
Why – What is your reason for wanting to achieve this specific goal? Let’s say your goal is to buy a home. Ask yourself why you want it. Your answer may be something like this: “Because I want to own my own house instead of paying rent for the rest of my life.” Okay, fine. But why? What difference does it make whether you own your own house or pay rent? Your answer could be, “Because I want the house paid off by the time I retire, so I don’t have to worry about paying rent or a mortgage on a fixed income. Awesome! But why is that? What will that do for you? Keep wondering WHY, and write down your answers until you get to the “flesh” of your desire. Once you have a clear desire in mind. . . .
Believe you deserve it – many of us struggle with low self-esteem, and at a core level we don’t feel we deserve success and abundance. Guess what? If we don’t believe we deserve it, we will resist it when it comes. We can do this subconsciously by sabotaging our own efforts, or we can simply refuse to even try. We must first understand and then truly believe that we deserve success and abundance. Moreover, we must be willing to receive it. We are so good at giving to others, but many of us will not accept help or blessings for ourselves. We feel that it is better to give than to receive, and in some ways it is. However, that does not mean that we should not receive at all. Be willing to believe that you deserve to be successful and happy. Then be willing to accept that abundance when it comes. Attach to the universe out loud every day: “I joyfully accept all the abundance and happiness that the universe has for me, NOW”.
Step by Step – If your goal is to buy a home, you probably have much smaller goals that need to be accomplished first. You will need to build up savings for the down payment. You may need to clean up your credit report and pay off your existing debt. You will need to see if you are eligible for a mortgage loan. Always keep your ultimate goal in mind, but focus on the smaller steps you need to take first. If I wanted to drive to California, I would have to pay attention to the route I need to take to get there, not just the destination. Write a list of the smaller steps that will help you reach your goal, and then start working on them one by one. Don’t overwhelm yourself just by thinking about that big, brilliant vision of the completed project.
No Matter What – Decide that you will do this, no matter what. It doesn’t matter what obstacles arise, it doesn’t matter if your desire and determination begin to fade. Real success comes to those who just don’t want to give up. Make a promise to yourself that you will continue to work toward your goals, no matter what. Write this promise out and put it somewhere where you will see it. Read it out loud to yourself every day.
Keep reminding yourself that nothing will change unless you change it. Burn your determination with positive thoughts and keep moving forward. If obstacles appear, find a way to avoid them. If there is absolutely no way around a certain obstacle, change your focus and begin working on another aspect of your goals. Often obstacles will fade if you are given enough time, or sometimes a solution will emerge when we least expect it. Let your determination glow hot and clear and burn away all doubts and fears. Know you can do it, and you will.
